Frequently asked questions

What is Video Controls Plus?

A browser extension that adds playback controls to HTML5 video. It works on any site that plays a standard video, with extra tools on YouTube, Netflix and LinkedIn, and it ships for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. To add it, see Install.

How do I control video playback speed?

Press ] or [ for 0.1x steps, or drag the slider in the widget up to 4x. For anything faster, type the speed into the widget's custom input or the Custom Speed boxes on the General tab in Settings, up to 16x. Speed control works signed out. See Speed control.

What is A-B loop and how does it work?

An A-B loop replays the stretch between two points you set; it needs a sign-in. Press Ctrl + Alt + A at the start and Ctrl + Alt + B at the end, and the video plays that part until you clear it with Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. See A-B loop.

Can I boost audio beyond 100%?

Yes, up to 400%, after you sign in. Press Ctrl + Alt + U to raise the boost and Ctrl + Alt + Y to lower it. See Audio boost.

How do I take screenshots of videos?

Press Ctrl + Alt + C to save the current frame as PNG or JPEG; it needs a sign-in. You choose download, clipboard or both in Settings. See Screenshots.

What video filters are available?

Brightness, contrast and saturation from 0% to 200%, plus grayscale, invert and night mode. You can save up to 20 presets, once you are signed in. See Video filters.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Letter and digit keys need Ctrl + Alt; only [, ], =, \, ', ,, . and Esc work alone. You can change them in Settings. See Default shortcuts and Change a shortcut.

Can I take notes while watching videos?

Yes: notes are saved with the timestamp and can be exported as Markdown, text or JSON, from the widget's Tools tab, and they work signed out. Ctrl + Alt + O adds a bookmark at the current moment, and that key needs a sign-in. See Notes and bookmarks.

Which video platforms does it support?

Any site that plays a standard HTML5 video, with extra tools on YouTube, Netflix and LinkedIn. Videos embedded in other pages get the controls too. See Other sites.

Does it work on Firefox?

Yes, with the signed-out controls: speed, presets, frame step, Picture-in-Picture, share timestamp, theater mode, notes and the widget. There is no Google sign-in in the Firefox add-on today, so the A-B loop, audio boost, filters, screenshots, auto-skip, the bookmark key and cloud sync are unavailable there. See Install.

Does it work on Netflix?

Speed and the core controls work on Netflix; the Netflix extras are off until you switch them on. You turn them on in Settings, on the Netflix Features tab. See Netflix.

Does Video Controls Plus collect my personal data?

Signed out, settings stay in your browser, the first time you accept the privacy notice in Settings your IP address is sent to ipapi.co for an approximate location (it is not stored), and anonymous usage events from the popup are saved with no account attached. Signed in, your account data, settings and the names of the video sites you used it on are synced, and it does not record the videos you watch. See Privacy and permissions.

How can I delete my data?

Open Settings, go to the Privacy & Data tab, and click Delete All Data under Your Data. You need to be signed in. See Account and sync.
